On August 11, 2026, reports detailed a 16-qubit on-chip photonic measurement-based quantum computing (MBQC) demonstration by Hefei Guizhen Chip Technology Co., Ltd. and the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC).
The system uses high-dimensional path encoding with four photons routed through 16 waveguide paths. It reached a 98.7 percent success rate on Grover’s search algorithm. The work targets multi-photon entanglement challenges in photonic platforms.
Photonics hardware updates
This demo follows other August 2026 announcements in the same technology area. Pasqal reported the first on-chip trapping of individual neutral atoms using silicon nitride photonic integrated circuits, replacing bulk optics to shrink system size.
User forum outcomes
The 2026 Quantum Computing User Forum ran July 20–24 at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Participants from the Quantum Computing User Program and other groups met in person to review application development, software practices, and device simulations. Sessions covered specific methods such as curvature-augmented imaginary-time evolution and resource-efficient stochastic projective quantum eigensolvers.
Government and commercial steps
Utah Governor Spencer Cox signed Executive Order 2026-06 on August 10, creating the Utah Quantum Initiative. It targets research, manufacturing, workforce training, and commercialization, with a statewide report due March 30, 2027.
Members can review the full Quantum Computing Report summaries for technical details on the Hefei-USTC system and Pasqal trapping result. The ORNL forum agenda and poster session notes are available through the lab site for follow-up on shared practices.
